Soft Contacts

Soft Contact Lenses

Soft contacts are the most common type of contact lens. These contacts are referred to as “soft” due to their softer, pliable nature that allows them to absorb water better than other lens materials.

Clarkson doctors are often asked about the need to re-examine your eyes each year specifically for new contact lenses. It is important to assess how a lens may sit on your eye due to the fact that the lens materials themselves vary greatly in both water content and thickness. There are wearers who prefer a thinner lens holding little water, while others may prefer thicker materials that do not hold as much water. This all has an affect on the comfort and vision in your new lenses.

New contact lens technology emerges each year for these soft, hydrogel lenses. Silicone hydrogel lenses are the latest development in this technology. What makes them so different? The lens material itself is partially silicone based, allowing more oxygen to pass through the lens to the eye. This makes wearing your lenses for an extended period of time more comfortable.
